Project Biennial

The Atomic War Command (Object ARK) was built from 1953 until 1979. It consists of 12 connected blocks, occupies a space of 6.500 square meters, and was originally designed as an atomic shelter. The goal of Project Biennial, no matter its biennial form, is to establish a unique institution – a hybrid museum as a result of the intersection between a military museum and a contemporary art museum. The entire project is inspired by the nuclear shelter as a military object which has lot its function today and thus has future. Beyond the belief that contemporary visual art can save the bunker from the inevitable disappearance, the project also re-codes “known patterns” of the way contemporary art and institution are related.
