Aleksandra Wałaszek is an interdisciplinary artist and writer, born in 1987 to a family of artists. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Wrocław, Poland (MFA in 2011) during which she also attended École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, France (2009-2010) and Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, USA (2010). She has received several awards and stipends including the President of Wrocław City Scholarship in the Field of Culture and the Arts for outstanding achievements. In 2016 she was a Nominee in Visual Arts category for Gazeta Wyborcza WARTO Award. Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally at various venues in Europe, USA, Africa and Australia, including the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Wrocław Contemporary Museum, during the 15th International Film Festival T-Mobile New Horizons,16th WRO Media Art Biennale among others. She has been Artist-in-Residence at the Centre for Creative Activities in Ustka, Poland; AIR Wro in San Sebastián / Donostia, Spain; Paradise AIR in Matsudo, Japan; Hidden Places in Görlitz, Germany. Wałaszek tends to focus on subjects such as: identity, memory, history and the meaning of a place and space as well as the language. Her work has involved the creation of conceptually based objects, photography and installations as well as performances.
